Dong Hai Chuan (1798 - 1879) was born in the Ching Dynasty.  Dong Hai Chuan, a native of Zhujiawu, south of Wenan County in Hebei Province was the founder of Ba Gua.  Dong was an imperial  bodyguard during the ending years of the of the last Chinese Dynasty.

Dong training took him throughout China and eventually landed him in Bejing as a servant in the Forbidden City.  As the story goes, Dong Hai Chuan was servant guests and while doing so caring heavy trays, he displayed his Ba Gua skills.  His ability to move throughout the crowd, twisting, turning, holding the heavy tray and dropping or spilling its' contents was noticed by all.  The Emperor recognized the high level skills of Dong and appointed him to the position of Palace Body Guard and Martial Arts Instructor.

A most famous story about Ba Gua the the challenge between Dong Hai Chuan and Kuo Yun Shen of the Hsing Yi System of kung fu.  It is said that Dong had challenged Kuo to a fight to see who's are was superior.  After days of battle between the two masters, it was determined to ba a draw, as either person could defeat the other.  With that, Kuo respected the are of Hsing Yi and a mutual agreement was made that any students who wished to study Ba Gua, could - and should - do so.   This merger of the two systems then brought about the practice of both systems to compliment one another.

To best accounts, it is said Dong Hai Chuan had up to 72 students which he passed his Ba Gua System onto.
